When it comes to crafting exceptional whiskey there is no substitution for experience. The great Master Distillers have spent decades in distilleries and rick houses learning their craft. They know every detail and nuance that goes into making spirits from the precise selections of water, grains, stills, barrels, and time.
In 1954 Jimmy Russell became the Master Distiller for Wild Turkey. Known as “the Budda of Bourbon” Jimmy is the oldest Master Distiller in the industry, still working after over 60+ years at Wild Turkey. In 1981 his son Eddie joined the team eventually taking the reigns as Master Distiller in 2015. Though Jimmy has passed the heavy lifting of duties to his son Eddie, he still plays a part in the day-to-day production decisions for the distillery.
In 1991 Jimmy and Eddie introduce Wild Turkey “Rare Breed”, one of the first Barrel Proof Bourbons to hit the market. Hand selected barrels of six, eight, and twelve year old spirits are married to create a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% barley. Uncut, Rare Breed is bottled at 116.8 proof. It is a rich, complex Bourbon that displays the expertise that comes with over one hundred years of combined experience that the father-son Russell team bring to Wild Turkey. Among whiskey aficionados Rare Breed is considered one of the great values in a market of Barrel Proof Bourbons which today often command prices approaching $100 a bottle.
Overall, Rare Breed delivers a rich, well balanced Barrel Proof Bourbon at a price that rivals the competition. It offers terrific value at our everyday low price of $57.99 but as this month’s featured price drop whiskey we are selling Rare Breed at the lip smacking crazy low price of only $44.99 a bottle. If you have not taken the opportunity to indulge in Rare Breed previously, there is no better time to find a place for it on your backbar. You will not be disappointed!
Bottle Pros - In the glass Rare Breed is multidimensional offering the imbiber a wide range of enjoyment. It leads with a nose full of bakery spices, hints of wood smoke and roasted nuts. The palate reveals sweet caramel, burnt orange peel, and pipe tobacco with a subtle heat and warm finish. Rye spice is well incorporated into the blend showing a slight peppery edge and acting as a foil to the sweeter corn notes. It is a mouth filling, refined whiskey that over delivers with every sip. |
