Drink Classy, Save Money …
There are over three thousand unique grape varieties found throughout Italy. Only a small number of them would be recognizable by name, yet utter the word Nebbiolo … and you’ve instantly go the attention of any wine nerd in the room. The shining star found in the rolling hills of Piedmont’s Langhe region and the feature varietal in Barbaresco ($$$) & Barolo ($$$$). Nebbiolo needs no introduction. Contrary to popular belief, it can be found in wines meant for more casual consumption. Today’s wine offers up signature Nebbiolo character and for an amazing price.
Collina San Ponzio has been in the Balocco Family since 1878 (nearly 150 yrs old) but we just discovered them last week. While they do boast an impressive portfolio including the aforementioned Barolo, the real head-turner is their Nebbiolo d’Alba. Focused beams of red fruit are flanked by crushed rose petal, worn leather and herbs. The palate is all precision with textbook acidity and racy tannins. This is what Nebbiolo is all about.
While it works awesome with elevated meals – remember it’s only $15.99 (less in a case), so don’t feel shy about using it with slow braised stews featuring fattier cuts & plenty of hearty root vegetables. Or a cheese board featuring triple cream anything, aged cheddar and parmesan. Not to mention your favorite pizza pie.
